Nikkole and American Idol’s Paris Bennett

It was indeed a pleasure to meet and speak with such an amazingly talented artist as American idol’s top five finalist Paris Bennett. There aren’t too many people who have a set of pipes that cause hats to be thrown into the air, even from the usually critical judge Simon Cowell.

As a singer/songwriter/producer I can totally appreciate and respect a talent like Paris. In my experience working on my current album “A Girl Like Me”, I had an opportunity to explore my voice and vocal strength even more than ever. The key to being a successful singer is emotion and being able to move the listener and lure that person in with your instrument, your voice. This is something that you are born with, it is innate. I also learned how to find different characters within to give to each song that you write and sing. My friends, the Grammy Award winning vocal trio The Emotions told me in a recording session, that I have an old school sound that is missing from today’s music, this is something that I feel Paris has as well.
It is blessing for me to have learned from some of the music industry’s best singers “The Emotions” and I share that in common with Paris who was trained by her mother Jamecice Bennett and Grandmother Ann Nesby. While Ann Nesby is not a household name to most, she is one of the most acclaimed vocalists in gospel music. Ann Nesby was the lead vocalist for the gospel group the Sounds of Blackness. The group was produced by the Grammy Award winning production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Great vocalists indeed have listened and lived for music all their lives, and are not afraid to take constructive criticism and remain true to themselves no matter what the current music trends may be. I found that while recording my cd “A Girl Like Me”, I had to stick to my guns and heart in order to give all of myself and not be afraid of what anyone would think. I feel that American Idol has chosen some great talent with such soulful singers as my new friend Paris Bennett and the super talented Elliott Yamin.

My Take on Songwriting

Songwriting is not a crucial part of becoming a singer but I do suggest it to those who enjoy a challenge. Anybody can write lyrics, whether they are appropriate material for performance or commercially feasible is extraneous!

So what do you need to write a song?

Technical Training may not be a necessity but all songwriters who wish to write sincerely should gain as much experience and knowledge as possible. Courses in Music Theory, Harmony, Sight Singing, Rhythm, Understanding Poetry and playing an Instrument will all help you become a better Composer and Lyricist.

So get serious about it, and turn your dreams into a reality!!!

Take a look at the #1 selling female artist of all time Mariah Carey, not only is she an amazing vocalist, but she writes each and every song. Along with Beyonce from Destiny's Child, Gwen Stefani and the list goes on.

Every songwriter has their own method, some 'hear' parts or the whole song in their minds, others use a hook or melody line to help envision the words and many lyricists collaborate with composers and musicians to produce the finished article. There are no set rules on how you write songs but there are various tried and trusted methods of producing a viable song for performance and recording.

Concept: - Decide the type, style and a brief outline of what you want the song to say.

Title: - Which may or may not be used in the song but should give an indication of the Theme or Concept

Lyrics/Music: - Whether you choose to start with the lyrics or the music, the lyrics should provide the listener with a picture of the theme or story. Once you have completed the first section repeat using different lyrics then examine your song to see if it requires a 'Bridge' (This is a section that differs from the verse). It can be a”'Hook” line, a “Chorus” or an “Instrumental' Break”.

In reading an article posted on American Idol Underground, I found a few poignant things I wanted to share with everyone.

How will the music industry look in 10 years?
The evolution of technology has significantly reduced some of the longstanding barriers to entry. As a result, the artists of the future will exploit fully automated self publishing models whereby from the convenience of their home studios they will conceive, record, interact with their fans and distribute their music.

How will the internet be supporting the music business?
To a large degree the broad distributive properties of the internet, coupled with continued technological innovation will replace a lot of the functions historically provided by record labels. As a result, the internet will represent the primary distribution payment and consumer feedback medium for the music industry.

What does this mean in a nut shell? Well, I believe there has never been a better time for independent artists to compete in the mainstream realm than NOW!

I just wanted to let everyone in on who I am as a singer/songwriter/artist, so below is something I wrote to let you know my mission.

The mission of my music is uncomplicated. It is to be solid testimony that it is where you're from and how you choose to view it. It is where you went and how you got there and it is unquestionably where you're at. I feel my illustration has been set. But for those dying for another taste of heart filled poetry, fear not, I'm only getting started in my growth as an artist. I have many more experiences to discover and share.

Every sound and every word are sketches of my life. Music that traces the beauty, an essence of resonance. Tones and reverberations of hues so plain to hear a mile of happiness. Lyrics of pain, laughter and joy I trace as I express my melodies. Embraced within the hidden depths felt within my heart. A canvas holds so many truths of which I am a part. A magnum opus of composition that life had so designed. Tells a story no one hears within each blended part. Upon this canvas of my life I came to express everything inside of me from hurt to exhilaration. I learn in peaceful harmony that I have no regrets. Blessings traced upon my life the Master hand designed Gratitude, peace and love I found in every line. And on this image of my life you will hear…the poetry within.
